I have a crop damage deer permit?
I'm going to kill some deer this weekend in a farmers field & I'm undecided what rifle to use. 25-06, 30-06, 308, 270, 243, 257 roberts, 35 whelen, & 7mm remington magnum are my only choices. They all got scopes & are sighted in. I probably won't be shooting further then 200 yards. All wide open farm fields, flat land, with forest bordering on 3 sides.
I forgot , 45-90 too. Single shot.
Ok, I'll answer your questions by asking you some questions...
You say you have access to all of these rifles in the calibers you listed and each has been sighted in....
#1 Have you previously shot any of these rifles? Not the caliber. The rifles themselves? Most hunters will tell you that they at least target shoot any rifle before they hunt with it.
#2 There is a big difference between the "kick" of a .243 and a 30-06. Which rifle you choose depends on how well they fit you personally. And how the kick hits your shoulder. And your "kick" threshold is?
#3 What is beyond the field your hunting? High powered rifle projectiles can travel a long way. Its why a lot of states have implemented shotgun only seasons.
#4 Do you consider yourself a good, bad or intermediate shooter? The larger calibers may be a better choice due to the damage they cause. I have seen a medium size whitetail buck run over 350 yards when a 25-06 shot clean through it. Coyotes found it before we did.
