Airgun Hunting
Choosing an airgun for hunting, what caliber and brand of gun?
I am choosing an airgun for hunting small - medium game (birds, squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks, possums etc.), my range is no more than 50 yards and I have heard that a .22 caliber gun would be best for bringing down the woodchucks, rabbits, and possums. My budget is $300, does anyone recommend a break barell airgun that would best suit this criteria? I was interested in the RWS 34 .22 , as well as the Gammo Whisper .22, any suggestions?
Both the Gamo Whisper and RWS 34 would be good choices for small game hunting. In fact the RWS 34 is usually considered the gold standard for inexpensive break-barrel rifles. Both guns should deliver around 15-20 ft-lbs of muzzle energy (depending on the numbers you use to calculate it). Both are perfectly capable of taking squirrels, rabbits, birds, out to 50 yards provided you do your part. The RWS 34 or Whisper might be a on the low end of the power scale for larger animals like possums or raccoon so you'll probably want to get a bit closer (to no more than 20-30 yards or so) since these animals have more muscle and bone to shoot through and you don't have the safety margin of a firearm or high-power PCP airgun. Well that or get a more powerful gun like the RWS 350. Still with head shots to the area around the ears they should work even on animals the size of raccoons.
You might add the Beeman RS2, Gamo CFX Royal Underlever, and Diana RWS 350 (which is a bit over-budget but still reasonable) to your list of guns for consideration. Also if you're not dead set on a springer, you might consider looking at the Benjamin Discovery, a pcp gun that delivers 21-22 ft-lbs of muzzle energy and which Jim Chapman, Tom Gaylord and a number of other airgun writers think very highly of as an affordable hunting airgun.
You can't hunt medium game (coyotes, javelina, hogs) with the kinds of airguns you'd be able to get for $300. You'd need to look into the larger/high power PCP guns in .25, .308, 9mm, .45 calibers for something in that size range. Those will cost more than $300 but will also deliver anywhere from 50 ft-lbs of muzzle energy up to around 200 ft-lbs of muzzle energy depending on the make and model.
