Why won't my ATN 2-6 X 40 scope hold a zero on my Colt Flattop Match HB AR-15.?
I went to the range yesterday to sight in an ATN 2-6 X 40 scope on my Colt Match Flattop HB AR-15, the rifle's iron sights are very accurate. It has a 1:7 twist 20 inch bbl and I was using 55gr ammo. I have been flirting with cheapo optics for several years and finally put out out some $$$ for a decent scope with Warne rings. Much to my dismay at 100 yds the shots were all over the place. No consistincy whatsoever. Some shots would be in the bullseye while the rest would strike 2 to 3 inches around the bullseye. I was shootong, like I always do, from a prone position with a GI bi-pod, I took off the bi-pod and rested the rifle on a rolled up sleeping bag, with the same results.I bought the scope used which may be the problem, but I thought an ATN was of very good quality, it is durable and does not have a mark on it, it came in the original box.
It could be the ATN, but before I go to ask for my money back, I'd make sure the mounts are solid, and that there's no play. Also, make sure you're using a consistent cheek wield, to ensure you're not encountering any parallax. Adjust the ring on the eye side of the scope to the range you're shooting at. Have someone else shoot it just to make sure. Maybe even take it to a local gunsmith and see if he can figure out the problem. If the problem does exist with the scope, I'd track down whoever sold it to me and ask for my money back, or at least try and get it fixed under the two year warranty, if it was purchased within the last two years.
Oh, as an addeum, I might try heavier ammo. I had the same problem with my Bushmaster with a 1 in 8" twist with some 52 grain rounds. The thing'll shoot one hole all day with Black Hills 68 grain rounds, though.
