Hunting guide guns?
It seems that alot of guides carry high powered rifles such as 375 and 45-70 to protect themselves and there clients from bears.I was thinking that a 12ga loaded with slugs would be a good choice but I never read about them being used in magazines or see them used on hunting shows.Do you guys think that a 12 ga loaded with slugs would work in a dangerouse situation?
the thing about the 375 and the 45-70 (especially at power level 2) they are actually more potent than a 12 guage shooting slugs. Roughly speaking a 12 guage with slugs is pretty equivalent to a 338 winmag.
Further, the 375 and 45-70 and the like are capable of shooting further than a slug gun. Why give up that capacity. Sometimes the guide will need to 'anchor' a wounded animal before it disappears into the brush if the hunter is unable to land a second shot, the greater reach of those two, while not specactularly long range, is definately better than a 12 guage.
Finally, when push comes to shove, even with a 12 guage vs a grizz, shot placement counts...and so does penetration. Both of those rifle rounds are long and heavy and will penetrate quite well deep into the animal to deliver a swift killing blow.
