Best Air Rifle For Hunting
What is the best air rifle.?
Okay I want an air rifle that is ACCURATE, long lasting, reliable, sturdy, and last awhile. It has to be under $100. When I say accurate I mean ACCURATE if yiu know it comes with a scope I need to know if its accurate and shock proof. I would like an air rifle for small game and want to trust it when im in the woods. What is the best air rifle for hunting and competion shooting. And please let me know if the gun may screw up after awhile. Also do diferent brands of pellets affect the accuracy of the trajectory. One more ? which is better "daisy powerline 880 or daisy powerline 901?"
Thanks so much
happy hunting
For less than $100 you're not going to get much if you get a new gun. Off the top off my head the list of reasonably good quality pellet-rifles for less than $100 includes the following: Crosman 664SB, Daisy 880, Crosman 2100, QB 78, Crosman 2260, Daisy 22SG, and Crosman Phantom. If you add in re-manufactured guns and shop around, you can add the Benjamin 39x and Gamo Big Cat to your list. Probably the best of the lot would be the Benjamin 39x, Gamo Big Cat, and Crosman 2260. Honorable mention goes to the Crosman 2100 and Daisy 22SG.
The Benjamin 39x family of guns are Crosman's premium multi-pump pellet guns. They've got a reputation for being extremely durable and well made. If you follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions they should literally last for decades. Power runs around 12 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which is enough for small game animals beyond 30 yards. Accuracy runs in the 1-inch groups at 30 yards range, which is enough for small game animals at 25-30 yards. This is probably your best bet, if you can find one used.
The Gamo Big Cat is a relatively inexpensive springer. Like all Gamo's springers, they're neither the best or worst in their category. New they run about $130. If you get a re-manufactured one, you can usually find them for less than $100. Power is good at around 14-15 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Accuracy is good at 1-inch groups at 30 yards. Durability is mediocre. They're better than the Crosman budget springers, but not as good as guns like the RWS Dianna 34. Still one should last for several thousand shots before the spring starts to weaken and power falls off. This gun comes with an inexpensive 4x32mm scope that's designed for use on spring-piston airguns. Its not the best scope ever made, but it works.
The Crosman 2260 is a co2 gun. Its reasonably powerful at 11.5 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Its reasonably accurate (1-inch groups at 30 yards). And its durable if you follow the maintenance instructions. The upside is there's no cocking of springs or pumping of levers. The downside is that you have to buy co2 cartridges and that the gun will be temperature sensitive. (When the temperature falls below 50-60 degrees F the gun's power will fall off and the point of aim will shift, so its not a good choice for a cold climate.)
The Daisy 22SG is another multi-pump gun. Its got around 8-8.5 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Its going to be reasonably accurate (1-inch groups at 25-30 yards). And its going to be reasonably durable if you follow the maintenance instructions. It gets an honorable mention mainly because its power level is less than the Benjamin 39x guns. Still its a reasonably good choice for hunting small animals at close range.
The Crosman 2100 is yet another multi-pump gun. Its got around 9 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Accuracy should be 1-inch at 25 yards, if you get a new gun and can find a pellet it likes. (Mine is a re-manufactured gun and I'm still looking for a pellet it likes.) Durability is fairly good, if you do the proper maintenance. Honorable mention comes from the fact its not as good as the Benjamin 39x...
The Daisy 880 and Daisy 901 have the same basic internals and same performance level. Since that's the case price and aesthetics are the primary difference. Personally I'd recommend you just go with a Daisy 880.
Different brands of pellets will greatly effect the accuracy you see. Some pellets just won't group well in a gun no matter what. Others will drive tacks in the same gun. As a general rule, medium weight pellets (7.5-8.5 grains) tend to work well in most .177 caliber guns and medium weight pellets (14-15 grains) tend to work well in most .22 caliber guns. However the only way to figure out which pellets your gun likes is to shoot a lot. The best way to do that is to buy a sampler pack, like the straight-shooters ultimate sampler pack (http://www.straightshooters.com/straightshooters/sssampler.html), and try a lot of different pellets.
