Blaze Orange Hunting Gear
Crazy survivalists in the woods...What do I do?
They creep around the woods in military gear/camo and do gay little pretend training drills; shooting at targets where the fired rounds can intersect hiking and game trails. To cap it off, they wear no orange blaze at all. It is a completely dangerous and selfish use of public hunting grounds. I've informed the forest ranger but he is a fat phuque who won't go anywhere his truck won't - essentially he does nothing. I'm afraid that either I'm going to get shot by one of these losers or that I won't see them and accidentally shoot (at) them.
What do I do?
If it's private property where they are doing the shooting, there's nothing you can do, it's fair use and they are well within their rights, so get used to it or move. If it's on state lands, it depends on your state. In PA it's illegal to shoot at random, or to target shoot on state lands, unless designated an official shooting range. In PA, you would call the Game Commission, and they would have to intervene and would fine them.
I'm not sure how it might play out in your state, which you didn't list, but you'd likely be able to contact your state's game or wildlife management governing organization and see what they say. I'd avoid direct confrontation for obvious reasons, but if you get nowhere with the state, and you live adjacent to the property where the shooting is taking place, you could try the state police, noting that it sounds like a warzone in the woods behind your house, and that you're worried something illegal is going on. Shooting + scared citizen usually causes at least a drive by to see what's up. Local PD will probably not waste their time unless a house, property or person is shot, but you never know... State forest rangers usually don't want to do a whole heck of a lot of anything, at least from what I've seen, so I'm not surprised you got nowhere there... They are typically a different group than your state wildlife or game commission, who will usually take a more active approach to this type of thing as it equals revenue from fines.
The key offending parts of what they are doing, at least by PA's rules, would include: target shooting on state lands not designated for such use, shooting at random, group activities contrary to intended use of state lands, unsafe practices being carried out on state lands, and destruction of state property (bullets are going somewhere).
Good luck!
