Building Deer Stands
Building a Deer Stand?
Looking for a cheap and easy way to build a deerstand. As in taking something and making a deer stand out of it.
Are you looking to build a deer blind or a deer stand?
To build a cheap deer blind, just take a look around the area you are hunting. What do you see?
At the simplest level, just grab whatever is handy and shape it into a deer blind. Are you in the woods? Weave some fallen sticks, tree tops, and limbs together to make a square area to hide your outline.
In a marsh? Cut down some cat tails or reeds native to the area. Cut 4 2x4's about 3 feet in length and drive them about a foot into the ground. Take some more 2x4s and nail them to the tops of the stakes you just drove to make a box. Spread the reeds/cattails along the box. Staple the foliage in place with a staple gun every so often so it doesn't blow away. You could probably make a nice blind with some elbow grease and $10.
You hunt in a farm field? Buy or borrow some bales of straw and make a blind out of it. If you really want to get high tech, you chould build a "shack" with a 2x4 frame and some plywood or particle boards on the sides. Then you could pile bales of straw around it and on top of it to make a nice hut. Given the weights potentially involved, you should have some basic construction knowledge so you don't build a structure that is going to collapse when you throw the bales on top.
You could also get real creative with ground blinds. If you hunt in a pasture, cut a pair of cow figure out of 2 pieces of plywood. Paint the cow silhouettes to look like a cow. Use some 2x4s to hold the pieces together and make it so it will stand on its own (I'd suggest cutting some pieces 3 feet long and attaching the 2x4s in between the cutouts so you have room to sit inside and with 4 or 6 of them, the cut outs should be sturdy enough to stand on its own.
Are you interested in a true in the tree permanent treestand? Some 2x4s, some plywood, and some nails. Doesn't get much easier than that.
Again, it is best to have some basic construction knowledge and/or some knowlege about physics/forces. It is best to get a cluster of trees. Nail some 2x4s between trees to create a frame. Cut a piece of plywood to cover the frame and you got a tree stand. How much reinforcing you need in the floor will depend on a number of variables. That is something you'll have to figure out for yourself.
From there, deck your treestand out however you want to. Personally, I like railings. If you have railings, I would fix some cloth between the railing and the floor frame to conceal movement. If you really want to look good, get a gallon of glue and a paintbrush. once all the leaves have dropped, paint some glue on the cloth you are using. With the glue side down, drop the cloth on a pile of leaves so the glue dries to the leaves. This will add a 3-D effect to your tree stand.
If you have some carpet scraps, throw it on the floor to keep your feet warmer and to muffle the sound of your feet on the wood.
Whether you are building a blind or a stand, anything made of cloth or carpet, make sure to use new stuff. Old fabrics and carpet tend to smell. Obviously, you don't want to tip the deer off on your location.
The sky is the limit when building blinds and stands. I've heard about a guy who built a "tree house" so to speak, with electricity, heaters, TV, and a recliner. I never saw the stand with my own eyes, but it is feasible (not really hunting though).
Good Luck! Have fun with it.
