Elcan Digital Hunter Rifle Scope

Elcan's Digital Approach to Hunting

Most hunters are used to traditional Leupold-type riflescopes. Most of them are quite reliable and accurate. However, it is exploring new gadgets that give genuine pleasure to experienced hunters. Elcan has long been known as a U.S. Army manufacturer of electronic and infra-red optics equipment. For the bigger market, the company has released a completely novel digital riflescope in an aspiration to introduce the digital era of hunting.

Elcan is the first optics company to release a hundred-percent digital scope. Elcan DigitalHunter is equipped with a photo camera and a video recorder. The new scope also features a number of other functions, such as trajectory compensation, reticle adjustment, crosshair customization, zoom capability, and computer synchronisation.

However, it is the scope's LCD screen that is the central feature of the gadget. Technically, Elcan DigitalHunter riflescope is only partially a scope. The new device links together zoom lenses and a camera to provide the hunter with a digital image on an LCD screen. Clearly, this is a rather unusual approach that has both positive sides and a number of possible drawbacks.

Elcan DigitalHunter's LCD screen is fairly convenient and bright. The clarity of the picture is good, and it can be zoomed in up to 13.5 times. That being said, the company acknowledges that the image sharpness does tend to suffer in low-light situations. For all DigitalHunter's pluses, it is not a traditional scope, and certainly not an infra-red one. DigitalHunter's buyers are strongly advised to reserve the use of the riflescope for normal daylight.

DigitalHunter uses a hi-tech computer ballistics program to automatically adjust crosshairs for different trajectories at a variety of yardages. The program downloads data about rifle calibre, powder bullet, weight charge, and barrel length. The only thing the hunter does have to set manually is the distance. DigitalHunter will then automatically adjust the crosshairs for changing trajectories. Since the scope does not have a laser range finder (perhaps the only thing lacking here), a special button is designated to adjust reticles for different yardages. The scope offers 4 types of reticles to choose from. Elcan DigitalHunter enables the hunter to use all possible kinds of reticles, such as crosshairs, dots, or posts for different yardages or even bullets. Furthermore, with the digital LCD screen, you can choose the color of crosshairs. White crosshairs may suit better for dark backgrounds or targets.

The camera/recording function of the scope is new and well thought through. Even though the quality of  photos taken is fairly poor (3 mega-pixels is not a photographer's dream), it should be sufficient for a little brag in a hunters' company. Elcan's video feature seems even more appealing. In the active mode, the scope constantly records the previous five seconds, and a special function allows to adjust DigitalHunter to automatically save a fifteen-second video whenever you make a shot (or whenever the scope detects a recoil): 5 seconds before the shot and 10 seconds after. The saved video can then be uploaded to a computer to enjoy at home: whether to boast in front of other hunters or learn from your own mistakes.

Considering the digital nature of the scope, Elcan places particular focus on the durability of the device. DigitalHunter is designed to be shock- and waterproof. The latter quality is especially important as the scope operates on four AA batteries allowing for 4hrs+ of work time. For longer operation, rechargeable or lithium batteries are recommended.

Elcan claims that special priority is given to ensure DigitalHunter's durability. The scope is solid enough to endure the temperature as high as 120F and as low as -4F. The solidity of the scope is proven by lab and field tests.

It looks like Elcan DigitalHunter is a unique gimmick on the hunting market. The only possible obstacle to a future triumph is the scope's somewhat heavy 28 ounces of weight and its beginning at $1,500. Otherwise, the scope's suggests some exciting functions that are surely going to thrill technologically advanced hunters.
