What is a good gun for a woman for self-protection?
I am looking to get a handgun and am planning on taking a concealed weapons class. I have been shooting since I was five and currently own a shot gun and a rifle. I would say I am a decent shot, in that I can always hit the target, just maybe not as close to the center as I would like. I am looking for something that is fairly lightweight. I am fairly petite with small hands. I want a revolver, because I have a hard time racking back. I also like revolvers, because, for me, they are easier to check if they are loaded or not and easier to load and unload. I am thinking about a .38 special, which I usually do okay on, but I want to keep my options open. I have shot a .357 magnum and some 45's, but I am looking for something with a little less kick/weight. I thought about a .22, which I have found I aim the best on, but I am not sure if it is powerful enough and at what distances it is effective. Any advice??
I have heard that a .22 pistol has no take down power. Is that correct?
I'm 5', 95 pounds. I have a .22 Baretta, and I love it. Sweet little gun. No real "take down" power, -- they're not called 'pea shooters' for nothing. However, a smaller gun that is easier to handle makes for better accuracy in a tight situation. It is one thing having a steady hand on the firing range, it is another to have one when the adrenalin is rushing and your heart is thumping in your throat. When it comes down to personal confrontation, I'll take the pea shooter and count on aim. Effective distance, I really can't give you a really good assesment of that, but suffice it to say, this is not a long distance gun. I would say good accuracy 40-60 feet, and after that, it starts to degrade. However, I don't want to kill, I just want to stop/maim, and if I am going to be shooting in self-defense, odds are it is going to be reasonably close range. A small gun is also much easier to conceal as it slips easily into a pocket or even a dainty little evening bag. However, it is your choice. Pick the one that feels best for you.
