Locking Rifle Cases
Possibly dangerous dreaming behavior?
I have noticed that everytime I am in a stressful period of time, I experience a change in my sleep behavior.
When I was mobilizing to go to Afghanistan, I was told by several of my buddies that I had been sleep walking. I didn't do much, and didn't seem to have the cognitive ability to open my locker, but I did walk over to it, and try the lock. That sounds harmless, but considering I had two knives, an M-4 assault rifle, and an M-9 pistol in there (not loaded at the time, but later on...) there might have been some danger. I ended up putting my weapons in one of my buddies locker just in case.
Also, I have woke up before as a result of thrashing about in my sleep. One night, I had been lieing there just bashing my head against the wall before I woke up.
Is this normal for a person in a stressful environment, or should I get professional help?
I'm not crazy about the attention this will bring on me if I don't have to bring it up.
I'm glad that you are concerned about this--it could be potentially dangerous, and you are right to be worried.
It IS normal to have a change in sleep behaviors when under stress. People might have more nightmares, have a harder time falling or staying asleep, or sleep more fitfully. The sleepwalking is, however, NOT typical for someone under stress and could be serious under certain circumstances.
I have a brother and some good friends who just got back from Iraq. One good friend was sent back early--he'd been in a car accident and apparently his brain injury wasn't quite healed yet. He is an officer, and imagine his men's surprise when he came in the room in nothing but his underwear, bloody, and his shoulder displaced from it's socket WITH HIS WEAPON strapped on. Apparently he had had a seizure or lost consciousness--he had no memory of this afterward.
Now, your situation is absolutely nothing like my friend's, but it is an example of how dangerous it might be to have someone who is not fully aware of his surroundings around serious weapons.
I do understand your concern about revealing this to the required persons in the military. I've been around enough military people to know that both physical and emotional weaknesses are hidden as much as possible, because it can affect your job and even your military status. Plus, a lot of people say the care sometimes isn't as a good as civilian care. Perhaps you might consider talking to a civilian doc on your own if you have concerns about that.
I do think you should talk to someone, especially if you are again going to be in a dangerous situation.
