Can someone describe the Buffalo Hunt to me because I have to write about it & how the Métis used their land to make their living.
Also I want to know what groups did the government considered when it negotiated the Manitoba Act & why.
The Metis attached a lot of significance to the Buffalo Hunt. When it came out to do this, which was an annual event, the men would gather on horseback; and the local priest would come to bless them--hoping for success.
The hunt itself was very dangerous. The Metis would run into a herd of buffalo, on horseback, with their muskets cocked -- That is, held upright (for quick firing) such that as soon as they pointed the pistols horizontally, the guns would go off. You had to be well-practiced at this, since if the gun went off too early, you could blow your hand off. If you fell off your horse, you risked being trampled by several car-sized creatures.
Men were rated (In other words, you were a REAL man, if...) they were successful in the buffalo hunt; women were rated on what they could do with the products of the hunt.
