AR vs Shotgun for home defense?

I'm just interested in what everyone uses. my firearms collection is slowly progressing and as of now, my HD weapon is a 20g mossberg 500 with buckshot. my prefered weapon would be a remington 870 12g with 00 buckshot.

I own a benelli supernova with an extended mag and ghost ring sights so I can see them at night and this is my hd weapon. First off a shotgun using 12 gauge rounds is going to tear any home invader to pieces. An ar-15 uses the small fast moving .223. The problem with the .223 is it has low stopping power and it over penetrates. I've found this round lacking and went ahead with a 6.8 from ar-15 performance. A shotgun will not penetrate walls as throughly as a rifle bullet. Unless you live in the country i would highly HIGHLY advise against it. A pump-action shotgun is the best weapon for HD. If a home invader hears the *click* *click* they're going to crap themselves. This way you may not even have to use the gun and you could avoid all the legal bs. Now is all this to say ar-15's are useless for home defense? Absolutely not! During the los angeles riots a home owner pulled out an ar-15 and defended his house against rioters. The ar-15 is a menacing weapon. It shows you aren't screwing around. Its why gun control idiots are trying so hard to get them banned. They are ergonomic, compact, and reliable enough. Every family should own one, not for the sake of home defense, but because we may have to use them to defend our country. Yamamoto the organizer of the pearl harbor attack was quoted as saying "you cannot invade the mainland united states, there would be a gun behind every blade of grass" this has never been truer.
Overall I would get your rem 870 first and an ar-15 later. They're both great weapons but the rem 870 is great for home defense and get it with ghost sights so you can use it at night.
