Sawed off Shotgun for sale question!!! please answer?
I went to a gun show today and seen a sawed off shotgun for sale and a bunch of pistols with silencers, but I know that sawed off shotguns are illegal and I thought that silencers were illegal on pistols.
You can separate firearms in the USA into two categories, title 1 and title 2 (also known as NFA or class 2 or 3). Title 2 guns are machine guns, silencers, gadget guns (smooth bore pistols, pen guns), short barreled rifles and shotguns, and destructive devices (rifles over 1/2 inch bore, explosives). Title 1 guns are rifles with barrels 16 inches and over, shotguns with barrels 18 inches and over, and pistols with rifled barrels. While the federal government does not ban any firearms, they do put strict controls on the title 2 guns.
Some states ban some or all title 2 weapons. AZ bans title 2 weapons unless they are registered with the federal government. The ones you saw at the gun show were registered, unless the owner was very stupid.
Title 2 weapons require that a $200 tax be paid and routine ATF authorization obtained before unlicensed persons make or buy them. Only licensed manufacturers can make machine guns, and they pay a yearly special occupational tax instead of a tax on each title 2 weapon made.
