Shot Placement On Deer

hunting question "shot placement and caliber"?

I would like to know where the best shot placement is for mtn.Lion, javolina, and black bear. I would like a web site with a diagram if available. I am not a hunter but I do have some limited knowledge about shot placement on deer. I am curious about protecting myself if charged by a pig, cat, or bear (I understand that each animals anatomy is different as well as body density so a well placed 9mm shot might be ok for the pig and maybe the cat but doubtfully uderpowered on the bear. what would be a good size caliber? and what about bullet type(jhp, fmj) and grain?
I also realize all 3 animals are very shy and can almost always be expected to scare easly, I am talking about the possible charge. Or spooking the animal while i am out hiking.

When attacked by any animal, there isn't much discussion about shot placement. You shoot the ONLY thing you can see that will be most discouraging and hopefully fatal to the animal. That is a head shot. No animal I know of charges sideways so heart/lung shots and shots to break down shoulders and spines are totally unlikely. About the ONLY thing you see with an animal charging is its head and perhaps a little bit of shoulder showing around it. The center of the target is the face and head. For that reason, you will find a lot of guides in areas with dangerous animals preferring magnum calibers in handguns and rifles shooting massive lead projectiles or 00 Buckshot and slugs from 12 ga. shotguns. The slug from a shotgun can be effective, but a single projectile calls for considerably more accuracy than multiple shot pellets or balls from the buckshot. My back-up gun here in Alaska is a double barrel twelve gauge with the 00 Buck loads. I am confident with the results. The bear won't be.

He used leashed tracking dogs to follow wounded deer far beyond the hunters' points of loss, and this yielded more complete information on wounded deer behavior than has...
