What brands of shotgun should I look at buying?
I've never owned a shotgun before. I'm buying it to keep in the house in case we ever have an intruder, but I may occasionally use it for some bird hunting and shooting clay pigeons. I'll probably get a 12 gauge, but if I can't afford it, I'll consider a 20 gauge. I want something relatively low price and reliable, but I don't want anything junky. What are the most affordable brands I can buy that you wouldn't consider to be junk.
Metropol mentioned a "defense shotgun". How is that different from a hunting shotgun? Is it even worth considering if I expect to occasionally use it for hunting?
Hunting shotguns have barrels in the 24" to 28" range, and sometimes much longer, with either fixed or screw-in chokes.
Shotguns intended for defensive use have short barrels. The legal minimum length is 18" but nearly all manufacturers use 18.5" as their standard to make sure the overall length is at least 26"
If you are going to buy a firearm for home defense, you'd damned well better learn to use it and how to hit what you want to shoot before an intruder breaks into your home.
You've probably been told that you don't have to aim a shotgun, just point it in the general direction, pull the trigger and mow down everything in a ten foot wide swath. That is a bunch or horse manure! At inside the house ranges the spread of shot can be covered by an average palm, about 4". If you don't point the gun where you want the shot to go, you WILL miss your target.
You've probably also heard people say that you should use #8 birdshot in your home defense shotgun. Sure it you manage to hit an intruder with an ounce or ounce and a half of #8 shot you will stagger him, and if he is lightly dressed you will make a nasty shallow surface wound. If he's wearing a heavy coat you might not even do that. A pellet of #8 shot weighs 2 grains, it would take 3500 of them to make a pound. Such a light pellet lacks the mass to penetrate the vital organs which can cause a lethal or incapacitating wound. Use buckshot for home defense. 00 (pronounced "double-ought") buckshot is probably the very best performer, but it also has enough weight to penetrate walls. I'd recommend 0 ("single-ought) Buckshot or #1 Buckshot, these have the necessary mass to penetrate a human body but are less likely to penetrate drywall than 00.
I recommend that you purchase a 12 gauge Mossberg Model 500 pump shotgun with two barrels, a 26" screw-choke barrel for bird hunting and sporting clays and an 18'5" barrel for things that go bump in the night.
I also highly recommend that you take a Hunter Safety Education Course and join a local sporting clays club so you can learn to handle your shotgun properly.
