Hog hunting public land or guide?
I want to go hog hunting and am thinking about using an outfitter but feel kind of stupid since they are a nuisance animal. I would kind of like to try my luck hunting WMA's or public land since it would be cheaper I hope anyways... But I heard in Texas its $300 for a non resident to hunt. I heard Mississippi would be a good place to hunt hogs on WMA's. I am pretty new to hog hunting so I do not know if I would have good success without a guide.
DuckSmith your from Arkansas i guess? Is there any good places down there to hunt hogs I know there are hogs down there just not sure where to go. If the hunting is good there it would be a lot easier than driving to Texas or Mississippi. I am from Missouri. I am a avid deer hunter but I do not know if that helps in hog hunting. I have killed two hogs but it was at a ranch in OK.
Here's the deal. At first glance I just couldn't understand the need for a guide to hunt hogs. But then after thinking about it, you do not have an area close to your home to hunt hogs on and therefore will have to travel. And if traveling, you do not wish to waste hunting in an area there are not any hogs at.So now I can understand the need for a guide. I would suggest you travel to a southern state to do your hog hunting. There are areas, almost everywhere really, that are overrun with hogs to the point you can hardly deer hunt for them. But here is another option for you if you could stay for a few days. Contact any southern states Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and ask which of the states wildlife management areas would you have the best success rate in.They can supply you with the regulation booklet and a map of the WMA of your choice.Most WMA's have primitive camping that would allow you to set up a tent and hunt and stay at the WMA for nothing. It would be fairly easy to kill a hog in one of them.And you can hog hunt, at least in my state as long as there is a legal season for anything going on.In my state, LA, you can hog hunt from the First saturday in Oct. until January 31. But you will have to use a weapon that corresponds with the legal hunting season. You can use a bow the entire time but if using a gun you cannot use a high powered rifle during the squirrel season. You hog hunting then will have to be done with bows, 22's or a shotgun. And in most states in the south there is no limit on the amount of hogs that can be killed. Good luck.
