Toy Shotguns For Kids
What dangerous toy did you have as a kid?
Small explosives, firearms, lawn darts? Chemistry sets? Dolls with glass eyes just the right size for swallowing? What was your pleasure? And with the blessing of your parents and the toy industry, no less?
I had a painted metal top (probably lead paint!) that played music when you spun it. The thing was probably about 10" tall and weighed around 2 lbs. The "point" of the top was, for all practical purposes, a drill bit, I kid you not. My brother whacked me in the face with this and split my whole upper lip open, good for a trip to the ER and a couple of stitches.
My brother also had a Daisy air rifle. It was suppose to fire a cork, but we used to like to pack it full of dirt clods and rocks so as to get a shotgun-like effect.
And don't get me started on fireworks ....
I was raised on a farm and there was nothing sacred that could not or would not be made into some kind of toy to entertain. Calves needed to be ridden, chickens needed to be thrown up in the air like footballs, chickens sometimes needed to have a mouth full of Dad's whiskey blown down their throats to make them drunk, an old hand crank telephone generator was used to put an electric charge in the chickens water bowl to see how high in the air a chicken would jump when she went to get a drink, even a young boy could wear down a bucking horse if you took it out in some plowed ground, an old tractor with one rear wheel brake locked would go around in a circle at idle with no one on it and it would do that til it ran out of gas. We had an old hospital gurney with wheels on it that was fun to ride when it was tied to the back of an old Model A or a tractor with a long rope. ( When Dad was gone to town). Indian Arrowheads could be found after a good rain if you knew where to hunt. I had a single shot twenty-two caliber rifle that was mine when I was a kid and many a cottontail rabbit ended up on a platter fried for breakfast with Mom's biscuits and gravy. What a shame that I had to grow up. This second childhood thing ain't all bad though.
