Armor your Pickup with an Aluminum Tonneau Cover
Pickup truck drivers/owners carry a part of their life in the truck bed. This cargo needs to be protected from rain, dust, prying eyes and ultimately from theft and damage. A hard aluminum tonneau cover satisfies this need. Whether you pick a plastic/composite board clad in aluminum or a retractable aluminum panel tonneau cover you can feel safer with the knowledge that a pair of scissors or a knife aren't able to cut open your tonneau cover and pillage the contents of your truck bed. You can relax when you remember that there is one or more keylocks securing the aluminum tonneau cover to the truck bed. The X5 Supra from Advanced Folding Cover LLC is an example of an aluminum clad hard tonneau cover. Each of the folding panels is made of EPS/styrofoam covered by an aluminum skin. You can pile up to 300 pounds on top of this lid. It cleans up with soap and water, installs easily, only weighs about 43 pounds and comes in black (but you can paint it). The big, big price falls between $700 and $800.
The Bak Flip folding truck bed covers is our next example. It comes in 4 varieties. The G2, HD and CS varieties all use an aluminum panel, powder coated exterior, filled with EPS ( expanded poly styrene ). The G2 is about 1/2 inch thick, weighs about 55 pounds and will support an evenly distributed load weight of 300 pounds. The HD is about 5/8 inch thick, weighs about 60 pounds and ups the load weight to 400 pounds. The CS is a contractor series tonneau cover and is made of heavier duty aluminum, weighs a little over 60 pounds, supports 500+ pounds and includes an integrated rack. The F1 series hard tonneau cover still uses heavy duty aluminum with an EPS core but it's covered with a very strong fiberglass reinforced polymer top. This gives the F1 improved dent resistance, strength, and heat dissipation properties. All the better to product the valuables in your truck bed. Cost is between $600 and $1000.
Fold-a-Cover's G4 Elite is great if you're going camping, golfing or participating in other recreational activities. You can cruise around with one or more of the 4 aluminum clad EPS core panels in the open position. Open just the back or front panel. The hinges are made of aluminum and stainless because FoldaCover expects you to open and close this lid a lot. All this aluminum for $650 to $850.
Pace Edwards pickup truck bed covers are known for their technological coolness, smooth operation and low profile aerodynamic design. Their implementation of various technologies, like their electric motor driven roll top, make them almost unique among tonneau cover manufacturers. The entire Pace Edwards retractable tonneau cover product line consists of 4 different roll top truck bed covers that differ only in their technological gadgetry. All 4 tonno models retract into a canister in the front of the truck bed taking up a small amount of space you don't normally lose with a soft rollup tonneau cover. But the coolness of a roll top tonneau cover far outweighs the small amount of lost space. The roll top itself is made of aluminum panels, but is not designed to carry a heavy load. The covers all fit over 5th wheel trailer hitches and have no drill, clamp-in installations. One of these lids will set you back between $650 and $2000.
So you see that peace of mind doesn't really cost a lot when you consider the fact that a set of golf clubs or the kids ATV can cost more than the hard aluminum tonneau cover you buy to protect them.
