How do you ship firearms?
I understand most of the laws regarding shipment of firearms and the difference in that with shotgun/rifles and handguns. So can someone help clarify this for me so I don't mess up. Please answer the following questions/statements for me. I have a few guns for sale on GunBroker and I want to make sure I follow the rules. Any tips and pointer would be most helpful. THANKS!
1) Any legal gun owner can ship a rifle/shotgun via USPS to someone in state or a FFL out of state? I.E. - So I can ship a shotgun to a FFL out of state by using USPS?
2) For a Handgun. I must first take it to my local FFL (or gun shop) and have transfer it and ship it to another FFL for a fee ("transfer fee")?
If I do take it to a FFL to ship to another does their fee generally include the shipping? ( so basically give them the receiving FFL address and drop the gun off? Just need some clarification here too.
The first one is a little bit of a catch-22. The only legal way to ship a firearm (except for traveling with it) yourself is through USPS. You must take it to a post office and inform them that it is a gun. But, it is illegal to take a gun of any kind into any federal building, especially a post office.
I asked a postal worker about it, he thought that the 'no gun in a federal building law' superseded the USPS shipping regulation. He might have been wrong, I don't know.
I would just take it to a FFL regardless of what kind of gun it is.
