Winchester 12 Gauge Shotgun Shells
Is Magnum Buck shot safe for a older gun?
I have a 1965 Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge shotgun and i was just wondering if Winchester double X magnum Buck shot might be to much for the gun. The gun is made for 3inch shells and so is the barrel. So would it be?
If it says it can take the 3'' shells, then you're set.
I own a 20ga. Ithaca flues that was made in the early twenties... and I run "High velocity" or "Magnum" 2 3/4'' shells through it regularly. No detrimental effects. Just as tight as the day it came out of the box (again, 80+ years).
Anything that has been made in the last 80-90 years should be good. Modern homologous steels. Scratch that, the past 110 years should be good, considering my Krag was made in 1898-1899 and is slick as ever (even though they are considered a "weak" action).
That being said, I wouldn't make it a habit of running ultra-super duper magnum black magic boom boom nuke reloads in a gun approaching 100+ years old. You don't want to add more wear on them than is necessary.
But THAT being said, your 870 will hold up to any shell you can feed it. It's going to go longer than you can.
