Winchester Supreme Elite Xp3
I need a deer slug for a smooth bore Saiga-12?
I need a deer slug that is as effective at expanding as the Winchester Supreme Elite XP3 Sabot Slug but for the Saiga-12 w/ smoothbore barrel. I also want it to have the same muzzle velocity.
I need it to:
1: have a muzzle velocity no less than 2100 fps
2: be a three inch shell
3: have no less than a 300 grain slug
4: have no less than 2900 foot pounds of energy.
5: be for a smoothbore shotgun
6: fire an expanding or fragmenting projectile
You are not likely to find all that.
A rifled slug from a 12 gauge smooth bore will have a diameter of .720 inch. That much lead is heavy. A typical 1 oz slug weighs 437 grains.
At the pressures that a shotgun can withstand it is impossible to push that much weight to 2100 fps. 1760 fps is about it.
Sabot slugs are smaller in diameter, therefore weigh less. The lower weight can be fired at higher velocity at maximum pressure.
As for expanding slugs, I don't know how large a hole you think you need to make in a deer to stop it. .720 is already prettty big. Bear Crap and Glacier Wolf have used them with great effect to stop Grizzly bears.
Here is more about slugs.

hornaday.com has an excellent sabot slug. It is for a rifled bore.
